There are many different types of pockets but generally they can be split into two groups; patch pockets and inside pockets

Patch pockets are stitched to the outside of the garment. They are usually made from the same fabric as the garment and may be lined or unlined.

There are three types of inside pocket: in-seam pocket which is sewn to an opening in a seam, the hip or jeans pocket which is attached to the garment by the waist and side seam and the slashed pocket which is made by cutting a slit into the garment – this type of pocket may be bound, or finished with a welt or flap.
