Hip or jeans pockets are attached to the garment at the waist and side seams.
They are usually constructed from 3 pattern pieces, the garment front, a pocket piece and a lining. On some commercial patterns the pocket piece and lining may be cut together as one piece. The pocket piece can be cut from the garment fabric or contrasting fabric.
The lining can be cut from any fabric and is often (especially in the case of jeans) cut from a lightweight lining fabric to reduce bulk.
